A business discipline that uses logical
analysis to find solutions to managerial and
administrative problems, such as the
allocation of resources, inventory control,
competition, and the identification of
information needed for decision-making.
Typically, a problem is identified by
researchers and a model constructed; then
solution techniques are applied to the model
to solve the problems. Key skills required
include mathematics, economics, and
engineering, and computers are increasingly
being used. Operations research was developed
as a discipline in the UK during World War II
in response to the need to improve the
efficiency of military systems. Its use
spread, and by the 1950s methods were being
adapted to improve management of industrial
systems in the USA.
